UCI Langson Library to Remain Open 24 Hours—Students’ Demands Met
UCI students planning a study-in at Langson Library received good news from the library administration earlier this week when they announced that the library will remain open 24 hours a day throughout finals week. For more on this story, including excerpts from the students’ manifesto, follow this link to UCI Librarian Dan Tsang’s blog.

UCSC Faculty Resolution—Memorial to Yudof
The UCSC Faculty Senate recently passed a resolution directing President Yudof to begin an aggressive campaign to defend UC and its budget, and demanding that cuts to salaries below $40,000 be reinstated immediately, that furloughs and other salary cuts be ended in 2010, that student fees gradually be lowered, and an adherence to the principles of shared governance. Here’s a link to the full resolution.

UPTE Unfair Labor Practice—PERB Issues Complaint Against UC
The University Professional and Technical Employees, which represents research and technical staff throughout UC, filed unfair labor practice charges against UC for refusal to bargain in good faith, and direct dealing with employees regarding the furlough program, among other things. The Public Employee Relations Board (PERB) issued a complaint in favor of UPTE’s charges. Here’s a link to the complaint.

Response to Protests and Police Violence
The ten chairs of the Academic Senate released this letter in response to the wave of protests and occupations after the Regents decision to increase student fees by an additional 32%.

A Crisis of Priorities-Why Sacramento is not the Problem
This website is devoted to analysis of UC budget information. Drawing on the work of UC-AFT President, Bob Samuels, and UC Berkeley faculty emeritus, Charlie Schwartz, much of the information presented here shows the existence of large sums of money, and various funding streams that UC could use to offset the state funding shortfall. The website is run by UC Davis programmer, Jeffrey Bergamini.

Know Your Rights-Unit 18 MOU Article 17 Layoff, Reduction in Time, and Reemployment
With the exception of length of notice required, all rights granted under the MOU are the same for reduction in time and full layoff. The university has an obligation to consider alternatives to layoff including attrition, retirement, and voluntary reductions in time. Seniority rights must also be considered prior to a layoff decision. UC-AFT is currently handling several grievances for violations of the layoff article. If you receive notice of reduction in time, or full layoff, please contact your Local’s field representative to discuss your rights. For a more full discussion of layoff rights, follow this link:
